There are so many choices that can be made in the video making process. Some are big, some are small and some are tiny, what they all have in common however, is that every single one affects the end video in one way or another.
We’ve been producing videos for decades now, and in that time, you see a lot of different things and work on hugely varying projects, which in turn gives us the experiences to make the ‘choices’ that will make the video as good as possible.
Though it isn’t just us who can make these ‘choices,’ it also comes down to the people who are hiring us and the people who will be in the videos.
In a lot of our corporate projects, the people in our videos aren’t actors and have very little, if any experience in front of a camera.
With that said, one of the best ways they can positively impact the end video is by preparing.
So why is a short script better for everyone?
Well firstly a short script will help the person being filmed prepare themselves for their ‘on camera’ moment.
By writing out what they plan to say they can ensure that their ‘part’ hits all the points they want to hit, while keeping it short and succinct.
A concise script allows the communication of its key points quickly and effectively, without losing the audience’s interest and we all know about attention spans these days!
Then by having a script, they can learn it and practise it like they are about to talk to a room of people, making sure to practise it out loud.
Perhaps counterintuitively, by knowing what the interviewee wants to say well, they will come across far more natural than they would by ‘winging it’ and feel much more confident when they are staring down the barrel of the lens.
The points above mostly focus on the person being filmed, so let’s explore how a short script is better for everyone!
As mentioned earlier, by writing a short script and preparing properly, the interviewee will be helping themsleves feel better on the day and reducing any nerves beforehand…
…the audience benefits as the purpose of the piece has all of the information they need in a short and succinct way, not to mention that the confident performance will add trust…
…the company benefits from how well the short and trustworthy performance is received by its engaged audience and what they take from it…
…the video production team will require less takes, which in turn will require less editing; saving them time in the overall production…
…the time saved by the production team leads to cost savings on elements such as extra work or re-shoots…
…and the overall video is just… better!
